Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia), in compliance with Law 2139 of 06 August 2021, will put into circulation the Guarniel / “Carriel Antioqueño” commemorative coin.

The obverse shows the image of the typical “carriel antioqueño” in which a border is visible at the upper part with four dotted, parallel, and concentric lines representing the stitching of the carriel. Made of leather, it has a strap for carrying it slung across the shoulder. Its characteristic bellows-like shape is defined by its multiple pockets, twelve on average, including five “secret” ones, whose openings are concealed so that only the owners know where they keep their most personal items. The buckle, eyelets, rings, and rivets guarantee its durability, which is essential for an item associated with work and travel.

The reverse shows a muleteer seen from behind wearing an “Aguadeño” hat, a leather apron, and his essential carriel. He is looking towards the mountains, the setting of the Antioquian colonization during which Jericó was founded in 1850. According to tradition, the production of carriel began there in the 19th century and soon spread to other municipalities such as Envigado, as reflected in the caption “JERICÓ-ENVIGADO”. The border with four parallel, dotted, and concentric lines representing the stitching of the carriel is also included, along with a latent image as a security feature that, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, reflects the initials “BR” (which stands for Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia)) or the Arabic numeral “20,” the caption REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA (REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA), the denomination of COP $20,000, and the year 2024.

The commemorative coin will be available to the public starting 15 November 2024. It may be purchased at the Bank’s Treasury counters in Bogotá, the Luis Ángel Arango Library, and Casa Gómez Campuzano, as well as at Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia) branches and cultural agencies nationwide, upon appointment request through the website according to the schedule on each branch.  

It has a face value of COP $20,000, is of legal tender, and may be used for any monetary transaction for the equivalent of its face value. The coin is delivered inside an acrylic capsule along with a brochure containing a description of the coin’s obverse and reverse designs, as well as its features. The coin may be acquired in a special case (optional) for COP 37,000.

A maximum of three (3) coins per user will be exchanged while stocks last (200,000 units) upon appointment request on https://ext.bookitit.com/banrep.

To conduct the exchange 

  • The person must come to Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia)s facilities in their city, after scheduling an appointment at https://ext.bookitit.com/banrep.
  • Commemorative coins will be exchanged while stocks last.
  • Remember that this procedure is free of charge and does not require intermediaries. 

According to the External Operational and Services Circular DTE-406 Subject 74: Treasury Services, in order to carry out cash exchange transactions at the Treasury counters, you must submit one of the following original* identity documents:

  • Valid citizenship ID card
  • First-time ID card or the certified duplicate-procedure ID
  • Foreign ID card
  • Passport
  • Temporary Protection Permit 

*Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia) Treasury Department’s current regulations establish as a requirement for cash exchange transactions the identification of the user through his/her citizenship card or (first-time or duplicate ID). Considering this, minors may carry out cash exchange transactions, including those related to commemorative coins issued by Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia (the Central Bank of Colombia), through their parents or legal representatives, as per the Law.
