Starting Friday 15 November, Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia) will put into circulation the commemorative coin of the Guarniel or “Carriel Antioqueño”

This new coin is minted for commemorative purposes to recognize the artisan craft associated with the manufacture of the Colombian guarniel, as well as to honor Jericó and Envigado as the municipalities that preserve this tradition in Antioquia.

On the obverse, this new commemorative coin shows the image of a typical “carriel antioqueño” with all its features, which was recognized by the Congress of Colombia through Law 2139 of 2021.

On the reverse, the coin shows a muleteer seen from behind, wearing a hat, a leather apron, and his essential carriel. The muleteer looks towards the mountains, the setting of the Antioquian colonization during which Jericó was founded in 1850. The manufacture of carriel began in the 19th century and soon spread to other municipalities such as Envigado.

The design also includes a latent image as a security feature that, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, reflects the initials ‘BR’ (which stand for Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia)) or the Arabic numeral ‘20’, the caption REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA (REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA), the denomination of COP $20,000, and the year 2024.

The Guarniel or “Carriel Antioqueño” commemorative coin is silver toned, made from an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc. It has an approximate diameter of 35 millimeters (mm) and a face value of COP$20,000.
