Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia) announced that starting Monday, 14 July, Colombians will find the Bre-B Zone within the digital channels (such as mobile apps and websites) of various participating financial institutions, where they can register or confirm their Aliases. These Aliases will later be used to make payments and transfers to users and businesses.

“Aliases are a type of "nickname" that each user assigns to their account. Starting in the second half of September, users will be able to make instant transfers using just the Bre-B Alias and the amount to be transferred, regardless of the financial institution," explains Ana María Prieto, Payment Systems Department Director at Banco de la República.

An image shows a user managing their Aliases through their financial institution’s digital channels.

To complete this process, users can access the so-called "Bre-B Zone," identified by the system’s sign, within the digital channels provided by their financial institution. There, they can choose which Bre-B Aliases to exclusively associate with each of their accounts. These Aliases may include:

  1. National ID number
  2. Cell phone number
  3. Email address
  4. Alphanumeric code (assigned by the institution)
  5. Business ID code (exclusively for businesses)

Furthermore, if users have previously registered Aliases through any of the existing initiatives offered by the country's financial institutions, they will be able to confirm them. Users have complete freedom to decide whether to register, which Bre-B Alias to link to each account, and whether to participate in the system.

We encourage citizens to use their financial institution’s official channels for any questions regarding the registration process, and to be cautious with information from unofficial sources. Please note that Bre-B is not an app, does not have social media accounts, is not a website, and is not a service provided by Banco de la República. Every individual can register their Bre-B Aliases directly, without intermediaries, and at no cost.

With the launch of the Alias registration process in the "Bre-B Zone," Banco de la República marks the first milestone toward enabling an instant payment system in Colombia. The next step will take place in September, when the option to make payments and transfers using Bre- B Aliases will become available.

Bre-B is the result of joint efforts between the financial sector and Banco de la República. Its purpose is to streamline money transfers in Colombia by reducing costs, promoting greater formalization, and expanding access to financial products for the Colombian population.

Así, Bre-B (Like this, Bre-B in Spanish):

  • Starting 14 July, clients of any financial institutions connected to Bre-B can register their Aliases. They need to log into their financial institutions’ digital channels, where the Bre-B option will be displayed on the home screen. From there, they can register or confirm their Alias.
  • Each user may register up to four types of Aliases: their national ID number, an email address, their phone number, or an alphanumeric code. Each Alias may be linked to only one savings or deposit account.
  • Registering Aliases is the first step toward bringing Colombia into a new era of money management, offering an easy, fast, low-cost, and secure way to make person-to-person and person-to-business payments and transfers.
