Today, Banco de la República unveiled the commemorative coin marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santa Marta

The coin has been minted for commemorative purposes in accordance with Law 2058 of October 21, 2020, and will be available to the public starting this Friday, July 11.

Banco de la República announces the release of a commemorative coin marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santa Marta.

The obverse of the coin features the image of the Casa de la Aduana alongside the El Morro islet and its lighthouse, framed by a geometric-patterned border.

The reverse showcases a pectorale from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta—an emblem of the region’s rich goldsmithing tradition—accompanied by the inscriptions “REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA” and “PECTORAL NEHUANGE,” the denomination “VEINTE MIL PESOS,” the year “2025,” and a geometric border. It also includes a latent image as a security feature: depending on the viewing angle, either the initials “BR” (which stands for Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia) or the Arabic numeral “20” is visible.

The commemorative coin marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santa Marta is silver in color and made from a copper, nickel, and zinc alloy. A total of 200,000 coins were minted. Each has an approximate diameter of 35 mm and a face value of COP 20,000.

How to purchase the commemorative coin marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santa Marta

The coin may be purchased exclusively at the following locations: Banco de la República Treasury windows, the Luis Ángel Arango Library, and Casa Gómez Campuzano. It will also be available at the Bank’s branches and cultural agencies nationwide, in accordance with the schedules and conditions published on the official website. Each customer may purchase up to five coins, by appointment and while supplies last.
